My last stop during Kansas City Restaurant Week was Room 39 in Midtown (there is a second location in Leawood). I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked into this small, cafe-style restuarant…little did I know what I was in for.
First up, the white wine steamed mussels with spanish chorizo and grilled bread.
Adding the chorizo made for an interesting twist with the mussels. The chorizo gave the dish a little heat which paired well with the white wine sauce. It was a great combination.
The entree I chose was the red wine braised beef short rib with creamy polenta, brussels sprouts with chunks of bacon and veal sauce.
There are so many delicious combinations going on in this entree I don’t even know where to begin. These are without a doubt the best short ribs I’ve ever had. The meat alone was phenomenal but paired with the bacony brussels sprouts and the creamy polenta made it that much better.
A word to the wise: sharing is not caring when it comes to these short ribs. Use your fork as a weapon because you will want every last bite.
Dessert was an easy pick - the chocolate lava cake with goat cheese gelato.
I wasn’t crazy about the goat cheese gelato, but the cake and the melted chocolate center was top notch.
Overall, my meal at Room 39 was one of the best I’ve had in Kansas City.
Also, bravo to KC Restaurant Week – here’s to tipping the scales and not your wallet.
It truly is this fat kid’s Christmas.
